What is EPDM

EPDM is the commonly used name for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber – a synthetic, versatile rubber material.

The main properties of EPDM are;

  • Outstanding heat tolerance(-50C to +120C),
  • Ozone, UV and weathering resistance.
  • Low electrical conductivity
  • Excellent elasticity which adheres to and bonds easily with other materials

Thanks to its wide range of tolerances along with its low cost, EPDM is one of the most adaptable and frequently used rubber materials in a wide range of industries and is ideal for outdoor applications.

Where is EPDM Rubber Used?

EPDM is most widely used in automotive (door and window seals, boot and bonnet seals) and construction (window seals, waterproofing sheets and gaskets) due to its excellent resistance to environmental factors as identified above. It is also being increasingly used for flat roofing because of its durability and low maintenance costs. EPDM is also often the first rubber material of choice in HVAC and Heating due to its low electrical conductivity, and its extreme temperature and weathering tolerances.

It is also used in almost all types of applications as a universal material suitable for cleaning and sterilization processes. Typical applications are filling, dispensing, pumps, pipe and flange gaskets, valves, homogenizers, decanters and heat exchangers.  It also exhibits satisfactory compatibility with fireproof hydraulic fluids.

Being such a versatile rubber, EPDM is therefore used to make many different products such as Sheet, Matting, O Rings, Gaskets, Washers, Extrusions and Mouldings. Here at Delta Rubber we can help you with a huge choice of off-the-shelf EPDM products as well as rubber product manufacturing to suit your specific requirements.

Are there any limits to EPDM’s adaptability?

EPDM is an extremely popular material, however whilst it is a good sealant for water-based chemicals and vegetable based hydraulic oils, with anything more corrosive such as petro-chemical or halogenated solvents EPDM should not be considered.

Fun Fact!

Delta Rubber were the proud supplier of EPDM replacement rollers for the Babbage Engine Inking Roller at The Computer History Museum, Mountain View, California.
